Chapter Seventeen

MYREEN

Myreen cried herself dry before calling the police. While a normal human would have contacted them sooner, she felt no need. After all, she knew who killed Naleni. The Prime. Thinking about him all over again brought her rage to the surface to the point where she wanted to shift—and that right there was another reason to not call the authorities. If she accidentally changed into her ursa shape in front of them, there’d be a whole lot more questions.

Eventually, once she did regain control over her emotions, she did call the police so they could attend to the crime scene appropriately. If for no other reason than to get an official stamp from the authorities, closure, and hopefully some kind of compensation for the damage done. How else could she explain the destruction to her landlord?

While the police sifted through the evidence, she rang Kol again. Why wasn’t he picking up? Is he mad at me? Kidnapped? Dead? Her brain could think of five million different possibilities, and they all terrified her. I have to figure out my life without him. Just in case. It seemed every person she got close to ended up dead, so maybe it was in his best interest to stay away. At least until she could end the Prime’s reign of terror for good.

When she was ready to go, she approached the head detective. “Is there anything else you need from me?”

“No, you’re okay to leave for now. However, be prepared for more questions as they arise.”

“Whatever you need, I’m happy to cooperate.” Myreen clutched her bag on her shoulder. “How long is this place going to be a crime scene?”

“For the next couple of days. Then you can come back and clean up,” Detective Waterman said. “You’ll need to talk with your landlord about replacing certain things. The place won’t be safe to inhabit until the blood is gone and you have a new door. At minimum.”

“Right,” she said, numbly.

“But you have a place to go?”

She nodded. “I have a few options for the long term.”

“That’s good. This is my number, call it if you can think of anything else.” The detective handed her a business card. “I’ll be in contact with you soon, as will the funeral home with details about your friend’s remains and options.”

Another nod. Myreen found herself detaching further and further from her reality. Everything about the conversation felt like a dream. Any moment, she’d wake up and the apartment wouldn’t be in pieces, Naleni would be asleep on the couch, and Kol would be with Myreen in the bed. The more the detective spoke, the more she retreated to this fantasy, if only to keep herself from focusing on the harsh reality and just how deserving the Prime was of her wrath. Those were the only two places she let her mind wander. Fantasy, and revenge. She couldn’t go back to sadness. Not if she wanted her sanity to survive.

“It’s late. I’ll let you go.” The detective
